Asian Medicines and Global Health

Dr. Mona Schrempf

Seminar at China Centre

This seminar introduces fundamental questions and topics of efficacy and safety in Asian medicine in the context of Global Health in Asia (China, India) and Europe (with a focus on Germany and Switzerland). After an introduction to the subject of 'Global Health in relation to the WHO (World Health Organisation) and 'tradtional' Asian medicines, we will focus on China’s health system and the development of TCM as well as of Tibetan medicine until today. We also examine how Chinese and Tibetan medical systems expanded within Asia and how they spread to Europe. Using ethnographic case studies, we inquire how particular specific actors and the influence of biomedicine, politics, regulatory regimes, pharmaceuticalisation and new markets are shaping the practice of Asian medicine in diverse cultural contexts and clinical settings.
